95% of people believe they are self-aware.
95%…can you believe that? That’s a large percentage! But what does the data say?
Tasha Eurich, author of Insight, says that the actual number is around 10-15%. That’s a drastic difference. So why the misconnection here?
These are things that cause Self-Awareness:
1 - Fear of change:
The fear of the unknown is something all humans struggle with. We enjoy the same environment and any deviation causes us to freak out.
2 - Fear of being vulnerable:
In our ever-changing social media landscape many people struggle with honesty about who they are and what’s going on in their life so we develop coping mechanisms to avoid being honest to those around us.
3 - Fear of being wrong:
When we fear being wrong we risk shattering our world and everything we’ve known is true.
These are things we all struggle with and trying to tackle them is a great start to being more self-aware.
Here’s how to start on your path:
1 - To overcome fear of change start doing new things. BUT, and this is VERY IMPORTANT…DO NOT MAKE ANY LARGE SHIFTS! Most people flat on their faces when they try to make significant changes in one go. The key is to take small steps in the direction you want to go. Do you want to start reading books? Then start by reading an article a day. Then work your way to large reading material.
2 - To overcome the fear of being vulnerable only open up to those closest to you about minor insecurities or struggles. Let’s be real, no one needs to know all your deepest secrets in one go. Again start small.
3 - Fear of being wrong is a hard one to uncover and overcome because of how deeply ingrained it is in our personality. When you enter a conversation just tell yourself and remind yourself at all costs that the focus is not to win or beat the other person. You can do this by keeping a tendency journal or taking our 5 voices assessment to find out what your tendencies might look like. You can do so here: Link
The road to being self-aware is the first step in becoming a great leader. All great leaders have a strong sense of how they are and therefore how they fit into the world around them. The only way to lead them is by leading ourselves but we can’t do that if we don’t know ourselves.
As we uncover parts of who we are then we can start to shift from the 95% to the 10%
