What is that old saying about assuming things of others?
If you assume, you make an A** of U & Me.
Something like that right?
Now, that’s all great and catchy but there’s another piece to this puzzle we don’t talk about.
What are the physical, psychological, and environmental implications of assuming something without having clarity?
Here are some you need to consider.
#1 - Making assumptions puts you on the wrong path.
For the last few years I have been analyzing my life and now writing a book about the importance of understanding your current situation before making decisions. Airplane leaving the East Coast when you make decisions without truly understanding your environment you start a chain of events that can really mess you up along the way.
The key here is to pause and analyze yourself and the situation closely before you make a decision to take the first step. Once the first step is taken, it’s out of your hands.
#2 - Don’t assume you know what the result will be, pack your bags appropriately.
In life, we easily overestimate the destination and underestimate the journey. That is to say, we become infatuated with our destination so much that our journey easily dissuades us from staying the course after a few difficulties.
Don’t believe for one second the destination is a glorious place where everything will be answered and problems don’t exist, instead, remember the journey is the destination and that’s why you should pack a big bag.
Develop your toolkit early, simplify, maintain its integrity, and get going.
#3 - The winds of change blow strong. Stronger than you planned for.
Part of our underestimation of the journey happens because we don’t realize just how stormy the storms can be once they begin.
In my twenties, I thought the world was mine for the taking, and I lived like it was. Then one thing led to another, and another, and another, and after multiple family struggles, personal hurdles, and demanding situations I started to realize, that no matter how prepared or how ready I was to take over the world, things happen.
And we can always be certain we’ll know which way it will come from.
Ok, so what does all of this have to do with leadership?
Leadership only happens when people CHOOSE to follow you. If they don’t have a choice to follow you, then it’s just called power.
So leading means we work on ourselves first, and part of that journey is not making assumptions.
Because if you do, you’ll make an…..well you get the point.
