AI is here.
This means millions of people are worried to be going out of a job. The fact is the OpenAi’s ChatGPT started a massive movement where AI has now become a powerhouse disrupting all markets. What used to be easy jobs but required humans is now shifting. And these changes are happening right now.
Three studies from Harvard, Germany and London found, from July 2021 - July 2023, that “demand for automated prone jobs fell by 21% just eight months after the release of ChatGPT in late 2022.”
This is a clear and present result affected by the specific superpowers of AI. It worth noting this was in the early stages of AI and significant changes and growth from AI will more likely show higher levels of shifts in demand for certain jobs in future research.
One of the most striking developments, in my opinion, is the drop of demand for graphic design and 3D modeling jobs. According to the research the demand fell by 17% after the creation of Midjourney and Stable Diffusion
But the power of AI is undeniable and continues to be a tool so good it’s important for leaders to incorporate AI into the way they do business and lead their teams.
Here’s some other crazy stuff:
“…consultants using GPT-4 complete work tasks 25% faster and produce 40% higher quality results…”
“…ChatGPT decreased the time needed to write business documents by 40%, and improved writing quality by 18%.”
You see what I mean? This is wild.
So, great, if this AI stuff is changing and will continue to the way we do things, what should we expect and what should we do as leaders of our industries, teams and businesses?
The answer is very simple…don’t get left behind, invest in the new crucial skills that the future needs.
“People who have skills that are complementary to AI tools, such as critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence, may become more valuable and in demand, say the researchers. This shift in skill demand could reshape the labor market, with a growing delta between “high-skill, high-wage jobs and low-skill, low-wage jobs.””
You should read that again.
Now that you have, let’s talk about the fact most companies and leaders think that “telling people what to do because they get paid and it’s their job” is enough. It is not. And it’s silly to think that you can survive the AI revolution with this mindset.
We are entering the era of creative work. As the world begins to formulate in accordance with AI, finding and spotting genuine creative work is already becoming a massive priority for companies and leaders in many industries. Why? Because creative people see AI as a tool in a bucket of many tools. They don’t see AI as the end result but merely a small part of the journey. This is how you’ll stand out.
Also, in a world where everything appears to be more and more simple to understand, with easier ways to find answers, being a critical thinker and problem solver is the new “computer skills” people were looking for in the 2000s. Remember when being proficient in MS Office was a metric for your ability to do some jobs?
The other quality that will be on top of every employers list is emotional intelligence. When everyone’s jobs seems be getting simpler, and simpler how can people at work stay invested in the work they do? It really comes down to emotionally intelligent leaders that are able to inspire, motivate and impact members of teams and organizations in such a way they stick around and find purpose and meaning in the work. But not every leader can do that. Why?
Most leaders don’t find the value in developing themselves in the modern world and will experience the loneliness of being left back to lead no one.
It’s that simple. Without adapting to these changes, leaders are screwed.
This is why I think it’s important to do three main things to be a better leader and start pushing yourself ahead of the AI revolution instead of falling behind it.
Number 1:
Get to know yourself.
Too many leaders don’t think they need to work on themselves as a person to lead effectively. Leaders make mistake when they don’t pay attention to who they are and how their micro behaviors affect the members of a team.
Number 2:
Intentionality and grit.
Leaders need to develop ways to be more intentional with decisions while simultaneously maintain a high level of grit. The rapid market changes mean leaders have to keep pushing while never losing sight of the intentionality of how they lead or the goals aimed at achieving the larger vision.
Number 3:
Human connection.
The modern world has lied to us by telling us that being online has made us more connected. While that is true for the last 15-20 years, we have already started to see the disconnection that has also followed. The online world sometimes keeps us disconnected in ways we didn’t anticipate and therefore in the future we need to be more intentional about connecting with others at a human level.
AI is here to stay. The only leaders that will stay also are the ones that care enough to look at these changes and do enough to adapt. Don’t get left behind, look at this new era as a challenge worthy of accepting so you, your business, and your teams can survive the onslaught of automation.
I mean…only if you want to survive.
