Cue the 2023 goals of the new year!
Who are we kidding?
[Warning: this might be is a nihilistic post]
Last year I said I would do better at calling family. Nope, didn’t even do that consistently.
Maybe I was supposed to get consistent in the gym (how many people do this one?) and definitely screwed this one up, even though, for a few weeks in September, it went well.
How about…I’m going to stop drinking and save more money!
Finally pay off those credit card bills I’ve been dragging around for the last five years!
Yeah, I’ve heard you tell me this story once or twice before. Shit, I’ve told you this story once or twice myself. At this point I’m often the first one to say this stuff. But why would you listen to me? and why would I listen to you?
Let’s be honest–everyone–and let’s say it loudly and proudly.
We set too many goals too fast.
We don’t set a schedule with deadlines.
We hang out with the same people and you know you’re the average of the five people you hang out with.
We just don’t get dedicated enough to the things we tell ourselves we care about. (I’ve already accounted for the crap life will throw your way, keep reading)
And you know what? Thats okay.
Truly…Failure is ok.
At the end of the year, when we do this allover again, and you’re staring failure in the face and its staring back at you with an over-powering face that says you didn’t do enough, remember one thing.
You should’ve stuck to the plan.
The only thing that beats all these glorious dreams and hopes and goals and desires and all the beautiful stuff you’re writing down right now, is consistency.
So, don’t look at me…look at yourself and instead of asking what goals you’re going to aim for, ask yourself:
How will I push myself to be consistent this year?
Because, it’s not about the quality of your goals.
It’s about consistency.
see you in there.
[p.s. maybe nihilistic was too strong, i must’ve meant engaging]
