HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Every year we do this. Why would 2024 be any different?
That’s right, it’s not.
But if every year we make resolutions and resolve to achieve something, how far have we come to achieving them? In 12 Rules for Life, Jordan Peterson talks about comparing ourselves to who we were yesterday, and not to who someone else is today. If we compare ourselves to them, we forget to progress in our own lives, we ignore the growth we make in our own right.
We build our “New Year’s resolutions,” by using others and that’s exactly why we fail at them. Because these resolutions aren’t actually for us, they are for others. We’re too influenced by their lives and so we think what they have is what we should have.
This is a common theme.
I see what you have. I should have that thing. I try to get that thing. And suffer the pain of failure.
To create the best New Year’s resolutions, we don’t only need to want something, we need to know ourselves enough to figure out a path to get that something.
If we want to lose weight, then maybe we don’t need to lose 150 pounds, maybe it’s about losing 20 pounds and feeling less sluggish. This is a first step.
If we want to improve our financial situation, maybe it’s not about saving 100k, it’s about saving 1k. This is the first step.
If we want to be better leaders to ourselves and others then it’s not about being the CEO of a major corporation. Maybe it’s about improving our influence with ourselves and one other person in our life. This is the first step.
Our failures at achieving New Year’s resolutions in part come from this lack of understanding and knowledge of who we are specifically.
This is why I want to start diving deeper into the five circles of influence, personality, and action plans.
One of the main concerns of my clients is that they want to better build relationships, yet they do not know why those relationships do not blossom. Those relationships are lacking because our foundational personality is lost in a fog of trauma, and life experiences that force us to make decisions we wish we didn’t make.
These things make New Year’s resolutions all the more difficult, but our desire to be better keeps us…making them.
I propose, in 2024, that we do this right. Strip ourselves down. And build back up.
I’m reminded of this quote…
*Quick plug:
Substack is fantastic, give it a read*We need to be alive, to find ways of achieving these resolutions. They will break us down, and take away all hope of becoming the version we all see deep inside of us.
Throughout 2024, I will be transitioning out of Active Duty service into a career where I will be helping companies identify issues that impact the organization negatively and create environments where people WANT to be there with leaders they WANT to follow. Not to be confused with those places where people feel like they HAVE to follow or HAVE to go.
Environments like this create stagnation that turns into a feeling of “stuckness.” Once a team gets stuck…things can become lifeless, profits decrease, customer and employer retention lowers, and expectations go along for the ride.
Our goal?
To help leaders and teams become unstuck
Here are some topics coming up in January that will help us start looking at ourselves deeply and start breaking the crust so we can become unstuck.
Coming Circa 1st quarter:
Nature, nurture, and choice
Self-awareness and how knowing ourselves is not enough
Understanding Personality
The Communication Code
I hope you follow me on this journey to become more self-aware and achieve these resolutions. And invite those around you to share because we all need it, for real.
See you next week for our conversation on Nature, Nurture, and Choice.
