The generation that will save the world.
Have you noticed how crazy the world has become? It seems time hasn’t been an ally for us. As I get older, this newfound digital world with its trinkets and stimulating traps has quickly shifted from an amazing tool for growth and connection to a tool of division and uncertainty.
Hope appears to be further away than we’d ever imagine and yet I have hope…somehow.
This past weekend I had the distinct privilege of meeting with amazing young leaders to share ideas on how we can become better people and start building intentional relationships. I was elated.
The St. Mary’s Social group in Southern Maryland was started last year in pursuit of providing young adults, 20-30 somethings, as they call it, with an option to fellowship without alcohol. There are way too many drinking related things to do here in Southern Maryland and young people are not only aware but they’re doing something about it.
I left inspired by the simple act of meeting with members of a generations that baby boomers and gen-xers often criticize for being disconnected, and too focused on devices.
We talked about each of our leadership voices and how discovering our own voice is the first step in being intentional about it. Most people complain that their relationships are in shambles, or they aren’t where they should be. If someone hurts you, then you hurt them back. If someone turns their back to you, you turn your back to them. And the cycle goes on and on.
But this is why I advocate for finding who you are first.
Without finding who you are you have no clue how to give yourself direction, or even keep yourself motivated. None of it matters if the coach doesn’t know the players. And that’s the key to getting where you want to go.
If we, as society, intend to go somewhere remotely resembling a great future then our first step should be to look inside, not at the journey. Without knowing what we carry inside we won’t know which journey to choose on the outside.
The young leaders I met this past weekend, are looking inward and preparing for the journey.
